Report type 8

Supplementary Report

An addendum to an existing Meridian report addressing new information, a revised scope, additional questions, or matters raised in a conclave or joint report.

When the matter moves on after the report

A Supplementary Report is not a new investigation — it is an addendum to an existing Meridian report. It is the appropriate response when new information comes to light after the original report has been issued, when additional questions arise from the instructing party or the other side, when a conclave or joint report raises matters that need to be addressed, or when the scope of the original instruction has changed. The Supplementary Report references the original report, addresses the new questions or information, and updates the original opinions where the new information changes them.

When a Supplementary Report is appropriate

New information

New documents, photographs, test results, or physical findings have come to light after the original report was issued, and the original opinions need to be reviewed in light of that information.

Additional questions

The instructing party or the other side has raised additional questions that were not addressed in the original report and that fall within the expert's area of expertise.

Conclave and joint report

A conclave has been held and the joint report records areas of agreement and disagreement. The Supplementary Report addresses the areas of disagreement and provides the expert's response to the opposing expert's position.

Revised scope

The scope of the original instruction has changed — for example, additional defects have been identified, or the repair scope has been revised — and the original report needs to be updated to reflect the revised scope.

What is included

  • Reference to the original Meridian report
  • Opinions on the new questions or information
  • Updated findings where the new information changes the original opinion
  • Signed report on the Meridian Supplementary template

Not included: A full re-investigation unless the scope of new information requires it.

Who instructs a Supplementary Report

Any instructing party

A Supplementary Report can be instructed by any party who has previously instructed a Meridian report, where new information or questions have arisen after the original report was issued.

Construction and insurance lawyers

Where a conclave or joint report has been completed and the expert needs to respond to the areas of disagreement recorded in the joint report.

Insurers and loss adjusters

Where new information has come to light after a Meridian report has been issued and the original causation or scope opinions need to be reviewed.
