Report type 1

Basic Causation Report

A concise causation opinion for straightforward claims. Reviews documents and photographs and delivers a clear opinion on cause and consistency with the insured event.

The right tool for straightforward claims

Not every claim requires a full forensic investigation. Where the cause of damage is reasonably apparent from the documents and photographs — a burst pipe, a storm event with clear physical evidence, or a vehicle impact — a Basic Causation Report delivers a clear, signed opinion efficiently and at lower cost. It includes one site inspection of up to 2 hours. Meridian reviews the documents and photographs provided, inspects the site and issues a report on the Meridian Basic Causation template.

When to instruct a Forensic Report instead

The cause of damage is disputed by the insured, a third party, or a repairer
There are competing theories of causation that need to be addressed
The matter is likely to proceed to litigation or formal dispute resolution
A defensible expert opinion with detailed reasoning is required
The documents and photographs alone are insufficient to form a reliable opinion

What is included

  • Review of all documents and photographs provided
  • Opinion on the cause of damage
  • Whether the damage is consistent with the insured event
  • Signed report on the Meridian Basic Causation template
  • One site inspection of up to 2 hours, with labelled photographs

Not included: Repair methodology or scope of works. Reasoning is concise; where causation is disputed or a defensible expert opinion is required, a Forensic Report is the right instruction.
